REMARKABLE DIVORCE CASE.
THE DERBY CORONER AND THE BARMAID. In the Divorce Court, London, on Wednesday, was heard the suit of Close v. Close. Mr H. B. Deane, who appeared for the petitioner, and that the suit was that of Mrs Hannah Close for a judicial separation by reason of the misconduct of her husband, Mr John Close, a solicitor, and coroner for the borough of Derby. The parties were married in 1862 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Belper, Derbyshire, and there was one son of the marriage, aged 25. The adultery charged was with a young woman named Parr, at the Three Cranes Inn, Turvey, Bedfordshire. The wife for some time had reason to believe that her husband was unfaithful, and towards the end of last year, knowing that he had been on friendly terms with Miss Parr, formerly barmaid at the Royal Hotel, Derby, she employed a detective. On the morning of November 19 last the detective, who bad been watching for some time, found that Mr Close had arrived at the Three Cranes. The son in the morning had seen his father, who told him that he had business to attend at Worcester. In the course of that morning a telegram was received by the son from the detective, telling him to come to Turvey at once. On the following morning (Sunday) they went to this inn, which it turned out was kept by Miss Parr, and they made the excuse that they wanted some brandy for medical purposes. The servant said she could not serve it without getting the permission of Miss Parr. The son and the detective followed her upstairs, and outside one of the rooms young Mr Close saw a pair of shoes which he recognised as belonging to his father. Upon going into the room, he found some of his father's clothes, but his bed had not been occupied. He and the detective then went into Miss Parr's room, and under the bed in hiding he saw his father, who was in a lady's nightdress. (Laughter.) Evidence having been given in support of the opening statement by Mrs Close and the son of the parties, and there being no defence, Sir James Hannen granted a decree of judicial separation, with costs.
