STOCKTON
BURGLARY - On Thursday night, the 15th inst., the offices of Messrs. Thomas Close and Co., of Stockton, were broken into, and about £1,200 stolen therefrom, £70 of this sum being in sovereigns, and the remainder in bills, &c. Suspicion of the depredator falling upon a young man named John Dudgeon, who had been employed in this establishment, he was apprehended on the following day, and brought before the magistrates Police-sergeant Newton fond £79 10s in gold, and £7 5s in silver, wrapped in an old apron, lying in a shed in the Cricket Field, and the cash box containing the bills was buried in snow in a hedge bottom, near the Blue House, on the outskirts of the town. The boots of the prisoner answere the foot prints in the snow, near to the window through whih entrance had been obtained into the premises. The prisoner said to the policeman, “Have you found all the money? The three halfpence I think belongs to me. I did not disturb the papers, but left them just as I found them.” He made no defence, and was committed for trial at the Durham sessions, which begin on January 2nd.

DURHAM SESSIONS
JOHN DUDGEON (27) cooper, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the warehouse of Thomas Close and Leonard Cooke, at Stockton, on the 16th of December, and stealing a cash-box, sixteen bills of exchange, a bank note, and some gold and silver coin, and other goods and chattels. Twelve calendar months’ hard labour.

The Will of Thomas Close late of Stockton in the County of Durham Merchant deceased who died 12 March 1863 at Stockton aforesaid was proved at Durham by the oaths of David Roughead of the Borough of Haddington in Scotland Merchant and Thomas Hutton Close of Stockton aforesaid Merchant the Son the Executors.
